Imitating The Moon

MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2008

Recently I asked God to teach me something every day. Let me clarify that…. He already was trying to teach me every day, but now I’m waiting expectantly for that teaching. I hunger for it. I need it as much as I need food and water. And God has been more than faithful in granting my request!!!

Today, my lesson came from a lesson my daughter learned in school. Funny how that works isn’t it? We think that we’re the ones who are supposed to be so smart and have all the answers and be able to teach our kids what they need to grow up to be God-fearing adults. But in the end He uses them to teach us just as much as we teach them….

We were coming home from Awanas tonight, and the kids started to talk about the moon. To be honest, I’m not sure what made them even think about it. I wondered because as they were talking about it, I began to look for it and could not find it. I was really only half paying attention- between trying to drive (imagine that- it’s actually important to pay attention while I’m driving! :o) ) and then looking for the moon I was just a wee bit distracted! (Shh! Don’t tell the kids that I didn’t give them my full attention or they’d never forgive me! :o) ) As I was peering out the windshield, I heard Megan say to Josh, “The moon doesn’t actually have it’s own light. The light we see is the reflection of the sun on the moon.” Does anybody feel a lesson coming on? I sure did! Talk about a moment of reflection! I mean, this lesson was as obvious as the light of day! (Ok don’t mind me, I’m a little tired!)

2 Corinthians 3:18 says, “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” Are you starting to see the light?…..

I am the moon and Jesus is the sun! Without the light of the sun, the moon would just be another orbiting body in outer space. It gives no light of it’s own. Only with the help of the sun can it shine it’s light so we are not completely blind in the darkness of night. From the beginning God had it all planned out that the moon would not be able to shine independently. It was created to work only with the help of the sun.

It’s the same with me- with all of us. We were created with a purpose. But we weren’t meant to carry out God’s plan on our own. We were created to be dependent on God’s Son. Without Him we won’t ever do anything but “orbit” this earth with no obvious purpose. Without Him our lights won’t shine. And this world is so very dark that I think we need as many lights shining God’s truth as we can possibly have!

Lord, thank you for teaching me this lesson the way you did! Thank you that I don’t have to live this life depending soley on myself. I would never make it alone! I pray that you will bless myself and my children with the opportunity to bear witness to your love and mercy. I pray that what people will see in us is the reflection of the light of your Son!
